Glossary

ABS-plastic

It is a copolymer made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene. The proportions can vary from 15 to 35% acrylonitrile, 5 to 30% butadiene and 40 to 60% styrene. Primary properties are durability, hard surface, great finish. Some resistance against acids, alkalis, fat, oil and alcohol, but does not handle substances such as Acetone. An environmental friendly solution that replaced the doubtful PVC-plastic within our company some years ago.

Chipboards/Particleboards

Chipboards or particleboards are manufactured of a mix containing saw-dust and resin/glue which are then pressed together into a board. The core section always has a coarser mix. Main advantages are a lighter board and a reduced impact on the environment because you can use more material out of every tree. Also according to European standards they must be manufactured according to E1 & E0.

Chrome

Chrome is a metallic substance, often used as an alloy. By chroming it simply means electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal object. This layer works decorative, corrosion resistant, easier cleaning etc. Today this is a sealed process (in Sweden) which is much more environmental friendly than low budget, full nickel-solutions.

Compact laminate

Compact laminate are the equivalent to high pressure laminate but in this case with two surfaces and a significantly increased thickness. In average between 12-16 mm which allows the laminate to function also as a board with no need of particle board or MDF between. Also notice that this material demands pre-drilling and special system screw without tip. The edges should be lightly sanded and treated with for example paraffin oil.

Conference table

Also means tables for meeting areas. Often deeper than workstations (1000-1200 mm) which allows users to sit in front of each other with all the necessary conference addendums. Table-legs used are often similar to the workstations. Freely place able alongside the tabletop length. This allows optimization of room according to the dimension of the chairs.

Dowel

A dowel is a wooden rod made out of birch with milled longitudinal grooves and beveled ends. It is used to mount two wooden boards against each other after drilling and gluing.

Electric table-leg

Same as a regular table-leg butt with built-in technology which allows adjustment of height from sitting to standing with the push of a button. The more established solution works with a threaded shaft on which the engine ”climbs” upon. Simpler solutions but not as reliable are the round table-legs which often but not always works with a cogwheel that climbs in an embossed track within the legs inside. But often gets of track even after slight abuse of the table.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics are the doctrine of how the environment affects the human being.

Extractable tabletop

An extractable tabletop somewhat floats above the tables framework. By dividing the tabletop up in front of the user, you´ll get a within reach access point from above to your cable through.

Frame

The frame is a metal profile mounted under the tabletop to relieve the tabletop and offer an easy assemble with the table-legs, i.e. to attach table-legs in.

High pressure laminate

High pressure laminate is a surface/sheet material consisting of several sheets of paper covered with phenolic resin and then pressed together under high pressure. The surface can be embossed or colored. Thickness varies normally between 0,3-1,2 mm but are also custom ordered in larger dimensions. High pressure laminate always applied onto other board materials such as particle board or MDF.

Laminate

Laminate is a surface consisting of several sheets of paper covered with phenolic resin and then pressed together as the same time as the board is made (particleboard or MDF).

MDF

MDF means Medium Density Fiberboard and are a wood-fiber-board. The advantage are a mill able board which does not need to be contained with additional edging (if you can accept the color of the board in the edges). Today it’s also available in different colored versions.

Plywood

Plywood is a board consisting of several thin sheets of crisscrossed veneers that are glued together with phenolin resin and then pressed together under heat. There are two different types of plywood, cut by knife or lathe.

Powder coating

Powder coating is a surface treatment primary to metal products. The process itself starts by making the product electrostatic which attracts chosen color powder. Thereafter expose it to high heat which liquefies the powder and thereby enclosing the product with a smooth surface. When it has cooled down a hard and even surface awaits usage.

Sensaten

Sensaten is a polyethenplastic that is used as a sound absorbent within front screens and separation walls. Because it only consists of hydrocarbons it is also combustible, eco-friendly. It is also used in PET-bottle but then obviously in another form, the manufacturing process accepts vivid interpretations of the material in use. Density is between 20-300 kg per cubic meter. Sensaten is decent buoyancy and isolation.

Sliding doors

Sliding doors are space and work efficient for you as a user but demand in exchange a somewhat more advanced suspension. Often roller fittings which run in a metal profile mounted within the top of a cabinet. Simpler sliding doors or in construction also works with a bottom profile or castors. They mostly overlap one another which mean you can only access half of your cabinet at one time but you are still given a more ergonomically solution.

Stain

Staining means coloring the surface without covering which allows the wooden structure to remain visible. There are two kinds of stains, color which is the most common of today and delivers the wanted color directly. Earlier it was very common to work with chemical staining which gave the color through a reaction with the natural substances within the veneer or wood. Or by adding even more chemicals.

Swing doors/Folding doors

Are two boards mounted with hinges and opens by being pulled towards the user.

Table-leg

Somewhat the base of a table, often one per side and in our case prepared for a quick assembly directly onto the framework under the tabletop. Which allows users to choose exactly where they want the table leg along the long side? Today customers’ favors model T which means a center-placed metal profile which is attached to another laying profile, the foot. This allows more room for the users.

Tabletop edging

Edges are applied as an extra protection alongside the tabletop, it increases strength of the tabletop but also adds aesthetical values. The solid wooden lists we apply are 1-3 mm of thickness and are applied with environmental adhesive and high pressure, after milling. Thereafter we mill the list and the tabletop so no visible binders are shown. Sometimes when using laminate we also use colored abs-plastic instead of wooden edging.

UV-lacquer

UV-lacquer is environmental friendly, especially compared to regular lacquer with a chemical hardener. The UV-lacquer is totally free from emissions, no vapor when hardening under Ultra-Violet lighting. But the downside is the price, almost doubled cost compared to regular lacquer.

Veneer

Veneer is thin sheets of wood that’s cut out of log or lathed. The sheets are put together by gluing the edges against one another or by glue-stitching. The actual Swedish word fanér derives from the 17th century France but back then in the form fournier which means armed or substantiate. Perhaps the English word veneer has the same origin? Some common sorts of wood used within public areas today are ash, birch, beech, oak, cherry and walnut.

Workstation/Desk

This is the overall names of tables for one user, prepared for technology usage as well as ergonomically adjustable for the users’ special needs. The table-legs allow positioning anywhere in the length direction of the tabletop, adaptable for different needs. For example place the table leg 50-60 cm towards the middle and get more room for visitors or ventilation.
